How Meridian Floral & Gifts Won Idaho's Best Florist in 2023

Ever since I opened Meridian Floral & Gifts in 2011, I knew that people in Boise and Meridian have a lot choices of places to buy flowers, so if we were going to stand out, we would have to offer not just fresh cut flowers but the kind of experience you can only get in a fun retail store that people come to just to spend time in. I've always loved cute gifts, plants, and beautiful flower arrangments, and I wanted to attract customers who knew that there was a difference between expertly crafted arrangements and flowers from the grocery store. I also have always had a soft spot for the business I'm in, since it deals with the sweetest parts of daily life. For the last decade, my goal has been simply to provide the best flower delivery service in Boise and Meridian, so when we heard that Meridian Floral & Gifts had been named Idaho's Best Florist, and by extension Boise's best florist, I knew it was because of this goal.

Having said this, there are in fact two sides to how we won this award: the mundane side and the meaningful side. Idaho's Best, the organization responsible for these awards in the Treasure Valley, is very impartial about choosing their award-winners, so much so that we didn't know we were in the running until we had won. After we were nominated, we expected a public vote, but in fact the way they choose their winners must be more technical or mysterious. They may even have sent a private investigator in a fake mustache to order fresh flowers, or the florist equivalent of a Michelen critic. Whatever their means, we suspect it had something to do with how vocal our customers have been last year about how much they love our store.

That brings us to the other side of how we won. I've always believed in giving my florists the creative freedom to design the custom flower arrangements they envision, using the freshest flowers that are in season. Having been in this business a while, I know that unfortunately not every flower shop operates this way. By letting my staff use their creativity, I like to say that I just steer the ship, since it's my job to handle the financials, the strategy, and the big decisions. It's really my employees who make the ship sail, since they're the heart behind what makes the business great, and it's thanks to their efforts to be friendly, professional, knowledgeable, and quick that we received so many 5 star reviews last year. It shows that even though Idaho's Best probably didn't buy a bouquet from every flower shop in Idaho, there was still a great reason why they chose us!

From the beginning, I've always wanted my business to reflect certain values, namely creativity, fun, beauty, joy, integrity, and most of all, showing up for our customers. I think these values are what makes us the best Idaho florist, or at least the best florist last year. Even though it's convenient for so many people to buy their flowers from Albertson's floral, which is right around the corner from us and enormous, customers keep coming back to us because they love talking to our team and because they know they're getting real floral creations made local in Meridian, Idaho, designed by people who love flower arranging, and not by a corporate spreadsheet. We love our work, we love making beautiful floral arrangements, and we want to do it for a long time.
